Students from the Department of Law at East West University attended the launch of a new regional report, "Trafficked to Scam: South Asian Responses to Trafficking in Persons for the Purpose of Forced Criminality in Scam Operations," on September 16, 2026, at the Crystal Ballroom of InterContinental Dhaka.
The event was organized by Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), under a regional project on preventing and addressing human trafficking and migrant smuggling in South Asia, funded by the European Union. It brought together senior government officials, law enforcement heads, UN representatives, academics, students, and the media to discuss the report's methodology, findings, and recommendations on trafficking tied to cyber-scam operations.
EWU was represented by Ms. Nadia Rahaman, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law and Assistant Proctor, along with seven students: Raisa Zarin Dia, Ramisha Nujhat, Afrin Ali Jyoti, Mahidul Hasan, Turna Sarwar Jessica, Khalid Bin Masud Saikat, and Jalish Mahmud Saikat.
Mr. Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, launched the report as Chief Guest, reaffirming Bangladesh's commitment to stronger reporting systems, mutual legal assistance, and regional cooperation. The event was chaired by Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Additional Secretary of the Ministry, with remarks from Ms. Rebeka Khan, Joint Secretary, and presentations from representatives of the EU Delegation, UNODC, the UN Resident Coordinator's office, and senior police officials.
