East West University held its Fall Semester 2026 Freshers' Reception Ceremony on September 10, 2026, at its Aftabnagar campus, combining the welcome for new students with a commemoration of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in observance of Nazrul Year.
Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, attended as Chief Guest, stating that the UGC treats public and private universities equally and prioritizes merit in allocating funds for higher education and research. He noted that VAT on private universities has already been reduced by 5 percent, with the UGC working toward a further reduction. He also congratulated EWU on its achievements over 30 years and encouraged new students to build leadership skills through university clubs.
Presiding over the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of EWU's Board of Trustees, said the university's founding vision of providing quality education to deserving students from lower middle income families has largely been realized, noting that all surplus funds are reinvested into student scholarship programs. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shams Rahman added that EWU equips students with both academic knowledge and practical skills for careers at home and abroad. Remarks were also given by Prof. Dr. Anup Chowdhury, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, and a representative of the newly admitted students.
The ceremony closed with a cultural program for Nazrul Year, featuring performances by the East West University Club for Performing Arts and renowned Nazrul Sangeet artist Khairul Anam Shakil. Dr. Joy Samad, member of the Board of Trustees, was also present alongside faculty, staff, and new students.
