The Department of Law at East West University took 75 first-semester students on a field visit to the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on October 6, 2026. The trip was part of the course LAW0421-107: Legal System of Bangladesh and was led by Ms. Farzana Rifat Siddique, Senior Lecturer in the department. Its aim was to let students see the judicial system at work, beyond what they learn in the classroom.
The visit was arranged with the Bangladesh International Mediation Society (BIMS) and the Supreme Court Mediators Forum (SCMF). Students sat in on three courtrooms: a Division Bench hearing civil matters, a Division Bench hearing criminal matters, and a Single Bench handling Company and Admiralty matters. Together, they gave a first-hand look at how different kinds of cases are argued and heard before the apex court.
After the hearings, students joined an interactive experience-sharing session at the Supreme Court Mediation Center. Speakers included BIMS student wing members Ms. Fahima Akhter Riya and Ms. Sohani Islam Somapty, along with Mr. Shah Md. Babar, Accredited Mediator, Secretary of SCMF, and an alumnus of EWU Law. Mr. Arif Khan, Deputy Attorney General, and Mr. Mahbub Islam, President of BIMS, also spoke, while Dr. Simran Napit and Ms. Aditi Karki joined online from Nepal. Ms. Ifat Hasan Shammi, Secretary General of the BIMS Student Wing, moderated, and Ms. Farzana Rifat Siddique gave the vote of thanks for the department.
The day closed at the Attorney General's Office, where Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kazal spoke with the students for about half an hour. He talked about their responsibilities to the country as law students and future legal professionals. The Department of Law thanked Mr. Shah Md. Babar, the student volunteers, and Department Chairperson Dr. Nabaat Tasnima Mahbub for making the visit possible.
